Alena Trubitsina’s “Soul”

Alena Trubitsina’s “Soul”

Alena Trubitsina’s graphics are a bright representative of contemporary art brut. The artist deliberately refuses the academic approach, since in her work she works with the category of the unconscious. This is how her flat primitivist images are born. It is noteworthy that the author prefers a serial approach in her work. In this way, she tries to reveal themes that excite a modern person living in a metropolis.

An interesting example of such creative searches is the “Gauzy Plane” series. In it, Trubitsina turns to the legacy of Surrealism. Already in the description of the project, we see an indication that the artist is creating a visual narrative about the adventures of the soul in another reality. Of course, Andre Breton’s manifesto relied on the category of sleep, that is, ephemeral reality, although here we can also talk about a similar narrative.

The soul in Trubitsina’s understanding is a mask, and the way she depicts it has a clear reference to African art, which was often collected by artists of the historical avant-garde. In this series, we see only the conventionality and stylization of this image. This tells us that the artist does not copy the legacy of such masters as René Magritte, but reworks their ideas in the context of her creative vision.

The space in which the hero-mask is placed has no obvious depth; it is also flat, like the backgrounds of Francis Bacon. This technique helps the artist achieve the effect of infinite depth of space.

Thus, we can summarize that Alena Trubitsina is an original artist with a clear creative strategy. She masterfully navigates among the concepts developed before her and adapts them to her own needs, introducing a recognizable author’s style.
