Popular scholar, art historian, educator, author and the 1st-at any time Black professor of art background in Canada Charmaine A. Nelson will join the UMass Amherst Division of Record of Artwork and Architecture to educate Black Diasporic Artwork and Visible Tradition in slide 2022.
Pursuing an prolonged period of time of teaching art historical past at McGill College from 2003 to 2020, Nelson joins UMass Amherst from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design College in Halifax, Canada. There, she was a Tier 1 Canada Investigate Chair in Transatlantic Black Diasporic Art and Local community Engagement and the founding director of the Institute for the Examine of Canadian Slavery, the initially analysis centre to emphasis on the 200-12 months background of Canadian participation in Transatlantic Slavery.
She brings this study hub to UMass as the Slavery North Initiative, growing the target to involve each Canada and the American North. Nelson’s investigation is centered on postcolonial and Black feminist scholarship, transatlantic slavery reports and Black diaspora research. Her scholarship examines Canadian, American, European and Caribbean artwork and visible society which includes many forms of ‘high’ and ‘low’ artwork and well known art kinds together with Tv, film, images, print society, sculpture, painting and costume. She also is effective across a variety of genres together with portraiture, still-lifetime, nudes and landscape artwork.

Nelson has received a number of prestigious fellowships and appointments, such as a Bard Graduate Heart Fields of the Potential Investigation Fellowship in 2021 the William Lyon Mackenzie King Traveling to Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University in 2017 a Fulbright Checking out Investigation Chair at the College of California – Santa Barbara in 2010 and a Caird Senior Study Fellowship at the National Maritime Museum in the United Kingdom in 2007.
In 2020, Nelson hosted a guest seminar for UMass Amherst graduate-level pupils known as Up to date Students, New Art Record: Composing the Histories of Transatlantic Black Diasporic Art.
Nelson is the creator of 7 books including “Towards an African Canadian Art Record: Art, Memory, and Resistance” “Slavery, Geography, and Empire in Nineteenth-Century Maritime Landscapes of Montreal and Jamaica” “Ebony Roots, Northern Soil: Views on Blackness in Canada” “Representing the Black Feminine Matter in Western Art” “The Shade of Stone: Sculpting the Black Female Topic in Nineteenth-Century America” and she is a contributing creator for many other publications. She gained her Ph.D. in artwork record from the College of Manchester in 2001.
