Alina Marat’s exhibition Poetry of Algorithms opened for viewers at Elm Hill Contemporary Art on October 10, 2023.
Abstract art artists in the digital age have turned to new digital technologies to become pioneers of new types of abstract art. Many first worked with traditional art materials and then discovered creative programming to incorporate new precision, automation, and experimentation methods into their practice.
Alina Marat is a unique artist who combines traditional abstraction and digital technologies in her art. The exhibition Poetry of Algorithms presents six works by Marat: large-format aluminium panels covered with geometric abstraction, onto which moving digital ‘painting’ is projected.
An algorithm is a set of mathematical instructions that a computer can execute, especially if their complexity exceeds human capabilities. Although algorithmic procedures have been used creatively for centuries, such as in basket weaving and textiles, Islamic mosaics or musical notation, the computer has provided tools and techniques more precise than traditional handcraft methods. In the complexity of algorithms, Alina Marat finds unique poetic rhythms and directs their visual embodiment to viewers’ attention.
The exhibition Poetry of Algorithms by Alina Marat can be seen until 25 October, 2023 at Elm Hill Contemporary Art (20 Elm Hill, Norwich, NR3 1HG).
About Elm Hill Contemporary Art Gallery
Since its foundation in 1997 by Ann Forsyte, Elm Hill Contemporary Art Gallery has evolved into a global network of high-end art galleries representing a selection of international artists, each with a uniquely modern approach to creation. Collectively, our artists represent and promote contemporary optimism and a colorful view of life.
With Norwich gallery space we operate at the forefront of modern, vibrant culture with an ethos of commitment to our community of artists, curators, and supporters. Held to the highest standards of curatorial excellence, we strive to create unforgettable exhibitions, events, and experiences designed to inspire and transform.
Elm Hill brings a fresh perspective – through championing artists from all corners of the globe. Focusing on artists at the height of their practice, the gallery showcases their work through a diverse programme of exhibitions and events.
Along with other projects of the Curtis Foundation, Elm Hill specialises in promoting art from Europe and its neighbours to introduce a greater understanding of the rich linguistic, religious and historical ties that connect these areas to international audiences. The gallery is further expanding to support artists working in digital art through its online platform.
The gallery provides a varied programme across practices such as sculpture, photography, painting, video, performance and virtual reality, as well as its programme of Tuesday Talks, which address themes and ideas surrounding the gallery’s exhibitions. Artist catalogues and books are also on offer.
In 2023, Elm Hill gallery launched the Window Project, which utilises the gallery’s façade – home page – as an additional platform for displaying art. On our online platform we present a camera flyby inside the gallery space. This is a separate exhibition that is constantly presented in video format at the home page of the gallery website. The initiative has been repurposed to support graduates from various art schools through open-call competitions, which take place a few times a year. Art Schools are among the renowned institutions that Elm Hill has partnered with for this.
